This week, Molly said, “Let’s push up the ceiling!”

I had to ask, “Is that like ‘Let’s raise the roof?’”

These kids crack me up!

~ 2 ~

After a lot of thought and trying a couple of languages in our homeschooling, we’ve finally decided to go with the homeschooling cliche and we’re going to begin working on Latin. It was something that my senior English teacher said on Facebook not too long ago when she said that one of her most useful classes she ever took was some Latin in middle school.

So, I think we’re going to work on Latin for a while, and then when the kids are high school aged, they can decide on whatever language they want.

~ 3 ~

We have now found out that during February, two of the three kids are going to have to have oral surgery. This also means that it will be the first time that any of my kids have been sedated for any reason. I told Eric that the whole situation makes me feel a little like I need to be sedated.

~ 4 ~

Have you been hoping to go to the 2:1 Conference in April? If so, I would keep an eye on The Homeschool Classroom this coming week.

That’s just about all I have to say about that. But, really – I would watch over there, okay?

~ 5 ~

In the last few weeks, I’ve talked to a couple of people who thought that I went to college for art. I’ve dug that.

I have, however, stopped myself from saying, “If I went to school for that, they would have kicked me out.”

But, in all seriousness, it’s kind of mind blowing to me that the ways I’m making money these days are writing, art, and graphic design. I never would have guessed that even a few years ago. Sure, it’s not like I’m going to go to Paris on the money, but it’s something.

~ 6 ~

Speaking of design projects, I’ve started doing designs for ebooks. I’m really excited to share some of the designs, but neither of the ebooks have been released yet. So, that will have to wait. It’s been a fun change from some of the other design projects that I’ve been working on though.

~ 7 ~

For whatever reason, I clicked to another tab after writing #6 and only remember about an hour later that I hadn’t finished this list. What the heck?

I would say that I held off an extra day to write my “7 Quick Takes” because I wanted my 107th edition of 7 Quick Takes to be on January 7th instead of the 6th. But, alas, I’m not a good liar. (I never have been, and my Mom says that’s not such a bad thing, when I complained about it one day.)

Instead, I’ll just tell you that I slept for about 16 hours straight. I kind of wish that was a lie, but it isn’t. (Okay, I guess it is a lie. I did get up to go to the bathroom once, but then I went right back to bed.)

~ 2 ~

I have an appointment set up with an endocrinologist at the beginning of the week. (No, that doesn’t have anything to do with the sleeping.) They called on Friday and left a voicemail. In the voicemail, they asked for Angela to bring any lab work or results in. That would have been understandable enough (though I have no lab work to bring in). But, it’s what happened during that message that cracked me up.

You see, after she said Angela, she went, “Oh, um, or her parents.”

I’m not exactly sure why at that moment she decided that I was probably a minor. I know the computers at the clinic that I’m going to because I used to work for that company for many years. Birth dates are in a very front and center spot. Anyway, it was good for a giggle. (And my need to fight the urge to call my Mom and ask her to drop off lab results to them for me.)

~ 3 ~

This week, I have a post at The Happy Housewife titled “When a Friend Stops Homeschooling.”

I have already been contributing monthly there in the Home Management area of her blog, but I will now be contributing monthly in the Homeschool section as well.

~ 4 ~

This weekend, I’m looking forward to being back at our own parish for the first time since the end of November (the very first Sunday of Advent). While I know that part of the beauty of the Catholic Church is that we’re really home at any Catholic parish, there is something different about being at your own parish. There’s just something special about it.

~ 5 ~

This week at the grocery store, I picked up some ingredients that we don’t usually use in our meals (I’ll be writing about that later). My favorite part about that was when Eric said, “I hope I like quinoa, because I love saying quinoa.”

(If you’re not sure how to say it, it’s “KEEN-wah.” And it is, in fact, fun to say.)

~ 6 ~

When we had some friends over for dinner this week (which ended up being the ultimate highlight of my week), Chris made me look up the video of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Now, I don’t know how I missed this video, but it is just awesome.

Tricia (Chris’ wife) assured me that it wouldn’t be a “life changing” video. Chris, however, said that it just might be.

If you’re reading the feed and can’t see the video, you might have to actually come to the site to see this video…

We had leftover ham from the spiral ham that Eric received from work, added some nice Swiss cheese, and put it all onto some Ciabatta bread. Delicious! I can’t wait to try more sandwiches, including some of the ones I’m pinning on my “For My Panini Press” Pinterest board.

Apparently I needed a vacation from my Disney World vacation, as I have spent all week just trying to get caught back up. I feel like things are (maybe) finally getting back to normal.

I also feel like I would like to start planning our next trip to Disney World. Oh my goodness — it was just so fun!

On the tea cups

~ 2 ~

Although it might be kind of late to say this, I have to say it anyway. If you don’t currently have your children buying/making/whatever gifts for each other for Christmas, you really should. This is one of those traditions that I just love, and my kids get so excited to give gifts to each other.

I finally took the kids shopping (we actually did it in the store this year, instead of in the “Mom Shop” in my bedroom) this week, and they’ve been anxiously counting down the days until Christmas, while noting that they can’t wait to give their gifts to each other. I just love that!

~ 3 ~

When Molly heard someone talking (on the television) about going to the hospital and needing money to pay the bill, she said, “You have to pay for the hospital?”

My Mom told her yes, and Molly asked how much it costs. My Mom told her that it all depends on what kinds of things you have done.

“Oh, so it’s like a penny per thing?” Molly asked.

~ 4 ~

In another funny Molly moment (in the same evening), Molly decided that she thought she had known my friend “Miss Becky” for about 59 years now. I informed her that we had known Becky for probably about four years, and that Molly is only seven and can’t have known anyone for 59 years.

“Well, I used to be younger before,” was Molly’s retort. Despite arguments, she wouldn’t agree with our reasoning. I guess when you have good friends, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve known them forever.

I’ve been busy working on design projects for some blogs. I haven’t been keeping up with posting about them, but here is are a couple of the latest ones a header and button for House Unseen. Life Unscripted and a set for Catholic Deals.

I’m going to be doing some price tweaking soon, so if you are interested in getting on my queue list, be sure to do so very soon! (People getting on the queue list now would have projects starting in late January-early February.)

Really? This is volume 100? That’s like having done seven quick takes every week for two years, although I know that I’ve missed some weeks, so I have obviously done it for more than two years.

Crazy!

Here’s to two more years of seven quick takes!

~ 2 ~

At least once a week, I think about how much I would love to have an old library card catalog cabinet. Who knows where I would put it or what I would put in it, but I can’t help it. There is something so classic and retro about them.

Do you know why it is that I have to think about it once a week? It’s because there is one in the background of Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment on the Big Bang Theory. Every time I see it, I think, “Hey — I could find something to put in that!”

~ 3 ~

Do you know how you know you have been traveling in the car too long?

One time that we often think about is many, many years ago (before we had children) when Eric climbed from the passenger seat, into the back seat, and then into the trunk of our old Subaru Legacy after 17 hours of an 18 hour trip. (I know – it was bad. This is definitely a don’t try this at home kind of thing.)

We now have another one, though probably not quite so dramatic. While we traveled this weekend, we found ourselves on a two lane highway where one lane was closed. When I was sure that we would probably be sitting for at least a few more minutes, I announced that I was going to jump out of the minivan and run up and tag the vehicle in front of us. (Of course, I only did this because it was my parents in front of us.) The kids went crazy, and the whole event certainly livened up things in our vehicle.

While my parents didn’t even notice that the whole thing happened, I do kind of wonder what the people behind us were thinking.

~ 4 ~

Every time I look out at my porch since our slithering friend incident, I keep being sure that I’m going to see a snake. Why is it that I have lived here for eight years and never seen a snake. But, I see one once, and now I’m sure I’m going to see it every time.

Crazy Angie.

~ 5 ~

Tagging my parents vehicle wasn’t our only activity for our six hour drive. One of the things that Eric and I worked on was coming up with a daily schedule for me. I had originally had in mind something like Jessica had done on Life as Mom, but in the end, we just assigned times to some things and not for others.

I’m really excited to try out my new schedule, and have been trying to add it to my days some over the last couple of days. I’ll post more about it as I keep working at it.

Do you know what my favorite part of it was though? It was that, after a while of asking Eric for his help with putting something together (since this kind of thing is up his alley, but I know he has been so busy) was that he brought it up on our trip home. He had put some thought into it and had very constructive things to say. Plus, then he followed it up by telling me that he wanted us to keep talking about it as time went on, but in particular, he wanted us to have a discussion about how things were going and what needed to be tweaked when we take our next road trip (which is already planned).

It’s funny how, as life goes on, romance looks very different. Because, darn it — that was about some of the most romantic things he said to me all weekend.

~ 6 ~

Do you know what is a time suck though? Planning a Disney World Vacation!

Now, don’t get me wrong though. This is not a woe is me kind of thing. I know – we are so blessed that we’re going to be taking a trip like that. So, no complaints. But, I have to admit that I just had no idea how much time would be taken up with planning this thing.

Of course, it doesn’t help that we made reservations to stay on site, then switched to an off site hotel (per my Mom’s request), and then last week, we switched back to on site (per my Mom’s request again). I am now pleased, because I wanted to stay on site all along. And, even better – we’ve scored a free dining plan!

A free dining plan, however, meant even more time planning as we had to make restaurant reservations. This was much more involved than I thought it would be. It seems like every part of the planning takes forever. But, at least every time I’ve had to call I’ve been helped by some pretty nice people.

~ 7 ~

How can I possibly be so clueless about meals? I just don’t get it. As I have to say from time to time, “I have a masters degree, for goodness sakes!” But, I have found that having grown up on casseroles and meat & potato kinds of meals makes me feel a little clueless about other things to make.

My weekend plan (I hope!) is to put together a binder of some healthier (or just not too bad) recipes. Wish me luck! (And, if you have any recipe source suggestions, please feel free to pass them along.)

But, one of the things that cracked me up about the whole thing happened when we were in the van the other day. We started talking about The Magician’s Nephew, as well as The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (which Noah has been reading).

I asked them, “Who do you think Aslan represents?” when one child mentioned his willingness to die for his people.

Silence.

“C’mon,” I go on. “Someone who was willing to lay down his life to save his people.”

“Jesus…” Jack said in a questioning tone.

“Yes, you’ll find that there are a lot of things in C.S. Lewis’ stories that mirror things in the Bible.”

Jack looked incredibly impressed and said, “Well, go C.S. Lewis,” just as though he had scored the winning goal of the game.

Do you know why I’m so crazy about my husband? Well, of course, there’s not just one reason. But, tonight was a great example of what a great guy Eric is. He knew I was stressed out that my craft room has (yet again) become a disaster area, especially when we were talking about what a nice area it would be for me to go write in as well. When I was recently working on a commissioned painting, I could only clear off one little area in which to work. It was just sad and overwhelming.

Every inch of table top was covered, and there was also stuff all over the floor. Eric helped me to figure out how to relax and just work my way through it (with a lot of help).

Thanks, Eric!

Operation No Sugar has been going pretty well. I haven’t completely cut out sugar, but have done pretty well at really limiting it. Except for a few times when I ate something very sugary. I have noticed two things that have happened when I have done that:

(1) It seems like I can’t control myself but to then have more.

(2) I have gotten a headache very shortly thereafter.

What’s up with that? Very unpleasant on both accounts.

~ 3 ~

We had our first day of what felt like official school on Thursday of this week. I actually counted 10 days this summer toward our 180 day requirement while we worked on our 4-H projects (as well as went on two educational trips). But, Thursday was back to the books. For the most part, the kids were in good spirits about it, and I think it actually made the rest of the day flow better and seem more enjoyable.

For the first time, I actually made myself ease into the first day by planning a lighter schedule, rather than just jumping into all of the subjects at once. That was definitely nice. (Here are some great suggestions of ways to celebrate the first day of school.)

~ 4 ~

I have had to watch this video about five times this week. It’s not recent, but it just thought of it and had to watch it again. It was fun to have a really good laugh. (My kids love it too.)

~ 5 ~

Odd factoid: Though Noah plays the piano best of all of the kids (he and Jack have been playing the same amount of time, and Molly just started a year after them), we only just recently realized that he doesn’t know the names of any of the notes. While he can tell you the notes of the keys, when he actually looks at the music, he can’t tell you what the notes are named. He just knows how to play them.

I know that he must have known that at some point, because our old piano teacher made them do some music theory. But, he is completely unaware of them now. I have yet to be able to decide if I’m concerned about this or just very impressed.

~ 6 ~

A few weeks ago, Eric got it in his head that it would be a wonderful idea if we went off and lived in the country. Nice, huh? If we could afford it, I would totally be into that.

Oh yeah, he wanted it to be in a yurt. I’m not so into that. Well, not unless we were still childless. But, somehow it just doesn’t sound so inviting with three kids.

That man cracks me up.

~ 7 ~

If you’re a homeschooler, have you downloaded the free ebook from the writers of The Homeschool Classroom? It’s called Homeschooling by the Numbers and it’s available to Facebook fans of The Homeschool Classroom (click on “free ebook” on the left side of the screen) and to subscribers of the HSC blog. Lots of great ideas in there from a lot of very smart women!

When we went out of town recently to visit my Grandpa and the rest of my family, I noticed a small Bible on the dresser in the master bedroom. It had a zipper around it to keep it shut, so I had to unzip it to check it out. It was then that I noticed that it was just the Psalms.

I got kind of choked up when I opened it to see that on the inside, it had a handwritten inscription to my Grandpa:

Staff Sgt. Leonard (last name)

From Grandmother

God Bless you and keep you safe. 12-25-1950

~ 2 ~

Molly has a new item that she wants to add to her wish list:

Yes, my six year old wants to put an adding machine on her wish list. She saw them at Staples the other day when we went in to buy poster board, and she fell in love. (Admittedly, I kind of like adding machines too.)

~ 3 ~

In that last quick take, I first typed that I lick adding machines.

While I have licked Eric’s computer just to annoy him while he’s working (and also to listen to him say, “Don’t you dare do that.”), I can safely say that I have not, in fact, licked an adding machine. (All the more reason to buy one, right?)

~ 4 ~

We have been reading Charlotte’s Web in the evenings for the last week. I just love it when we read a book that everyone gets into and really enjoys. It just makes me feel so happy when I go to shut the book for the night and then everyone begs, “Just one more chapter, Mom!”

I’m thinking that once we finish Charlotte’s Web, maybe we’ll go back to our Little House series and read our very last book, The First Four Years. It makes me kind of sad to think that we’ll be finished with them. (Our favorite of the series was Farmer Boy. The set of books was such a wonderful gift from one of my sisters.)

~ 6 ~

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a move away from commercial jingles? I have noticed that over the last few years, there are just so many more commercials that have already published songs as part of them. I don’t even know how many of the songs on my iPod are ones that I downloaded because of hearing them in commercials.

My latest download was of a song from 2004 that is currently in the commercial for the new Winnie the Pooh movie. It’s “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane.

I can’t believe that I’m headed to Savvy Blogging Summit so soon! I keep thinking that I’m not ready for the trip at all, but then I realize that I don’t really know what I actually need to prepare. So, maybe I’m just perfectly ready.

Molly got a new Littlest Pet Shop Blythe doll this week. She loved this one and declared that she looked very “country.” But, then the poor doll had a problem, we later learned. How did we find this out, you might ask?

Molly began performing a song (she loves making up songs) as the doll. It seems that this poor girl (the doll) wants nothing more than to join a Country Club. However, this is not the kind of country club you might be thinking of. This is a club for people who are very “country.”

Molly’s song (on behalf of this doll) included lines such as “I’m just a little girl from South Illinois” and “When I was a little girl, I once wrestled a bear and won.” There was also a back story about that this girl lived in the worst house on the block, that she had even paid to get into the “country” club, and then, mournfully, Molly would sing, “But they still don’t consider me country.”

Can I just say that that six year old girl is a hoot? She can get cranky and difficult at times, but she is just something else.

~ 2 ~

After several days of the aforementioned mournful song, Molly ran up to me today to tell me that her doll was finally considered “country” and had made it into the club! We all cheered. It was a pretty exciting moment at our house!

~ 3 ~

We really, really need to start working more seriously on our 4H projects. We signed up for twice as many projects this year as last year, but I thought, “No big deal, because this year, I’m going to have us work on them during the school year.” Yeah, that didn’t really happen much at all.

This week, so far, we’ve finished one of our books (for each boy) and got to add it to the stack of books we’ve finished our required activities from. Noah also worked on his woodworking project with Eric. This weekend, Eric will help Noah finish it, as well as work with Jack on his woodworking project. Plus, I’m hoping to get a few more things done as well.

Wish us luck!

Do you have children involved in 4H? How are their projects coming along?

~ 4 ~

Have you downloaded Finding Educational Activities in the Most Unexpected Places yet? While it can be purchased here on the site, it is still free right now for Facebook fans of Many Little Blessings! (It’s on the left sidebar under the “Free Ebook” tab.)

Go take a look, if you haven’t downloaded it yet. I have had so much fun sharing it with people! (I hadn’t been keeping track of the downloads, but Eric had me look today, and I found that it has been downloaded free more than 450 times.)

~ 5 ~

Am I the only one that didn’t know that you can add a + the end of bit.ly or goo.gl links (like you’re apt to find on Twitter) to get stats about how much they’ve been clicked on, etc.? If I’m the only one, then why didn’t someone tell me before?

But, you know, if I’m not the only one that didn’t know that, and you didn’t know that, then consider yourself informed. Then again, it might have been better if I didn’t know. I love stats and trends.

~ 6 ~

Lots of little girls draw pictures of flowers and hearts. And yes, my little girl draws pictures like that too. Molly loves art. But, today, she was very excited about the special picture that she wanted to draw for me. She took her time and made me a picture that was well done enough that I was able to look at it and then say, “Are those turkey vultures circling in the sky there?”

“Yeah! Just like when we saw them with Dad when we were driving,” she smiled.

I can safely say that it’s the first time I have been presented with a drawing of turkey vultures.

~ 7 ~

The latest quote that I can’t get out of my head (that happens with quotes sometimes, which is why I have to put them in paintings or digital work sometimes):

“You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.” ~ C.S. Lewis

The other day, as we took a walk with the kids and discussed their homeschooling, their grade levels came up in the discussion. I told them that since we were finished with the school year, they were each technically in the next grade up now.

I told them, “So, that means Noah is in sixth grade now, Jack is in fifth grade, and Molly is in first grade.”

Molly stopped walking and gasped, “I’m in first grade now?!?”

“Yep!”

“Oh wow! I’ve been waiting my whole life to be in first grade!” she exclaimed as she began to skip along.

May we all embrace the changes in life with such enthusiasm and wonder.

Noah got to try a new taste treat thanks to an overnight with Grandma and Papa. As we picked him up, he was so excited to tell us about it. He told us that it was like ice cream and that it has been from Wendy’s.

“It was a snowflakey!” he proclaimed.

With a quizzical look on my face, I asked, “A frosty?”

“Oh, yeah!” Noah said, “A Frosty!”

He then proceeded to tell the other children, in extremely great detail, about this amazing treat. It was clear that it wouldn’t be long before we had to give everyone a chance to try out those Snowflakeys.

What’s your favorite treat to get when you’re out and about?
