7 Quick Takes: December 31, 2010 (Vol. 65)

I usually have a hard time remembering how old I am. I can’t help it, it’s just not a priority for me.  However, this past year, 33 has been easy to remember.  (I like numbers like 22, 33, 44, 55, etc.)  Maybe after this week though, I’ll be able to remember that I’m now 34 just because it’s not 33 anymore.

Either that or I’m going to now spend a year fumbling over the numbers until after next Christmas when I turn 35 and it’s easier to remember again.

On my birthday, we did something that we rarely do — we went out to a movie!

We all went to see Tangled (in 2D, not 3D), and we enjoyed it so much! It was just such a sweet movie, without being too sweet.  That way, all of the kids — from the 6 year old girl to the 11 year old boy — walked out with only good things to say about the movie.  If you haven’t seen it yet, I would definitely recommend it.

Eric tried to get me a pretty extravagant gift this year.  Poor guy (and kids) when I returned it.  You see, I hadn’t worn earrings in about 14 years, and then on a whim wore them about three weeks ago.  I didn’t want to see foolish and tell them all that day, “Holy cow — my ears hurt like crazy!”  They actually kept hurting for days.

So, when the kids and Eric woke me up with diamond earrings, I was embarrassed that I hadn’t admitted that I had not enjoyed my earring experience a few weeks ago.  Then, when Noah blurted out how much they cost, I was extra embarrassed.  I had to tell them all that I wanted to return them, and then when they all felt bad, I had to tell them that if I was a cartoon character, my ears would have been huge and pulsating when I was wearing earrings a few weeks ago.

Luckily, they all understood and took it well.  (And I learned that sometimes you have to swallow your pride and admit when your ideas aren’t so great in practice.  It would have saved everyone some awkwardness on the morning of my birthday.)

After what we spent on three adults and three kids to go to the movies, get snacks there, and go out to lunch, I was glad that we had returned the earrings.

In fact, I had such a lovely day (and plus got to go out alone with Eric later and out to dinner), I asked for the day to please be my birthday gift.  I can’t remember when I have had such a nice birthday.

Merona Mittens from Target

I also got a pair of green mittens when Eric and I went out that night.  I loved them, as I loved the shade of green (they are the same pair as shown, but the color is not right on in that picture — definitely a bit darker with more of a dark lime hint to them).  Plus, I had been wanting mittens for a while.

Eric couldn’t agree with me that the $11 were a great substitute gift for the earrings.  I wholeheartedly disagreed.  I think I will love those mittens for at least a few winters to come.  (I hope!  As long as one doesn’t get lost.)

On a completely different note from birthdays and presents, I think it’s funny that my kids love the show House Hunters.  When we watched it tonight, out of the blue, Noah began to ask each one of us what would be on our wishlist for things we would want in a home if the House Hunters were helping us find a new home.

While I hope that we are all trying to be content with what we have, it wasn’t hard for any of us to come up with items for a wishlist for a different house.

~ 7 ~

We bought our house (our first home) about seven and a half years ago.  My Dad predicted that we would want to move out within five to ten years.  I thought we would want to live there forever.

I have to admit that now, another house does sound sort of appealing.  On the flip side though, it’s too hard for me to imagine ever selling our house and buying a new one.  In all honesty, it sounds kind of surreal.  It’s hard for me to imagine that people do it everyday.

Angie,

We saw Tangled and loved it too! Your earrings adventure made me laugh. I, too, wore earrings for our family pictures which is quite unusual for me anymore. My ears hurt for days!!!!! I think I’ll be dropping mascara next as well.

I am really glad that your birthday turned out like it did. I have to admit in the shower that morning I was beating myself pretty bad and wishing I could take it all back… I love you.

We found the “key” to going to the movies. At our local Costco, we can buy two tickets for $15.00. It pretty much makes it two for one. You should go to your local Costco/BJ’s/Sam’s to get a deal!

Well to the last one I have moves 12 times since I have been married. 2 of them to different states. It is al lot of work but worth it everytime so look at it like do we need more space? Do we need more closets is our kitchen working for us??? These are the ways to feel the reason for a change.
I grew up with parents that moved once and that was it. I love the adventure. Good luck if you decide to tackel this one!!

Love the House Hunters show too. Even more I love House Hunters International. Something about purchasing a home in a foreign land and living in a different culture.

Happy Belated Birthday Angie. I feel so old compared with you!! I will be heading out of my forties on my next birthday and it will be so easy to remember how old I am. I am thinking of telling everyone I am turning 65. Then they will say, “Oh Sue! How youthful you look for your age!” Why are we so reluctant to admit our age? What is wrong with getting older? I don’t really understand it.

We also loved Tangled. I liked that there was no adult innuendo, no potty humor, and the animals didn’t talk. Just a fun movie.

I would faint if my husband bought me diamond earrings. And then I would happily wear them every day. ;)

When we finally move to a bigger house (some day, hopefully) we are going to try to buy first and sell after we move. I can’t imagine keeping a house show ready with six kids living here.

@nicole,

If the earrings wouldn’t have hurt my ears so much, I suspect I would have worn them all the time too. But, trust me – I was in real pain wearing the other ones when I did.

I can never remember how old I am either, I always have to do the math!! And our family LOVED Tangled. My girls are both wanting to get it when the DVD comes out.
