Helpful Homeschool Hints: The Delegating Edition

in Helpful Homeschool Hints, homeschooling

Helpful Homeschool HintsWelcome to the very first week of the Helpful Homeschool Hints meme! Although this will be a weekly meme, can you believe that I’m already canceling it for next week?  So, join in this week, take Thanksgiving off, and then be back the following Thursday.  Helpful Homeschool Hints is a place to share great homeschooling tips, ideas, projects, or even just how to stay sane when things get busy.   (You can read all about Helpful Homeschool Hints at this link.)

As for me, I did something that I almost never do. I usually try to carry all the weight of homeschooling on my own shoulders.  This week, however, I delegated, and it was wonderful.

We are using Noeo Science for science this year (which we love), and it was time to do an experiment.  I have been feeling a little overwhelmed lately, and I almost said, “Let’s just skip this.”  I stopped, however, because I know that the kids get more from hands-on experiences than from anything we may read.

Instead, I sent a text to Eric and said, “Would you be willing to do a petri dish experiment on bacteria with the kids tonight?”

Within moments I got a text back and Eric was more than happy to do it.  In the end, I stayed right with them while they did it all, and it was very fun.  Still, it took off a lot of stress to not have to read all the instructions, prepare the petri dishes, and actually do the experiment.  And even better, I think that Eric really enjoyed doing it.

So, while I don’t think I’m going to start delegating a lot of my tasks, it was definitely a blessing.  In fact, I really think it was a blessing for the whole family.

I can’t wait to hear your homeschooling tips, successes, projects…whatever!  Just make sure to check out the Helpful Homeschool Hints guidelines to make sure that your link will not be deleted.  Remember to link to your direct post (permalink) and not just to the homepage of your blog.

I just love how your whole family got involved in what looks like a really fun science experiment!
Blessings to you,
Sue

@Sue,

The picture has to be one of my favorite recent pictures. I just love how you can tell that everyone was totally into it.

We’re all anxious to see if we grow some bacteria. Each dish was for a separate experiment. One was to try to lift bacteria/germs from something in the house and transfer them to the petri dish. Then, we had to put antibiotic ointment on half the dish.

The other experiment was to compare the saliva of two different people – each on half the petri dish. The kids were thrilled when Dad said he would do it for half the petri dish. LOL

Looks like a lot of family fun and learning!
I’m still learning how to delegate, too. After years of homeschooling one would think I would be better at this. Alas, it is an area I am still growing in :-) .
Thanks for hosting this meme!

Every single year, seriously, I am determined that my husband (a biology professor) is going to do one experiment each week with the kids. Yup. It’ll be blogworthy when that actually happens!

Ah, if only I could delegate to a 3 and 4 year old! :)

BTW, I tried using the code for your button/graphic for this link up, but it wouldn’t work. Not sure if it’s just my quirky computer…

@Martianne,

Thanks so much for letting me know! I thought I checked it, but I must not have. It seemed that some of my quotation marks in the coding were being difficult. I’ve fixed it up and tested it out now, and I think it should be fine now.

Thanks again!

Now, that is one bit of delegating that really worked well! I’ll have to try that with future science experiments, especially since my husband has more of an interest in science than I do. (I like math. Sick, I know.) Love the photo!

That is great that your husband got involved! I’m going to try to link up each week. Great idea for a meme!
