7 Quick Takes: September 3, 2010 (Vol. 51)

in cooking/baking, fitness, homeschooling

~ 1 ~

With any luck, I think I’m going to try to drink my last soda tomorrow. (You know, barring being somewhere where that is absolutely all that is available to drink.)  Who knows if it will actually work out, as I have been drinking way too much soda for way too many years.  But, on the up side, Eric agreed that he should do it too.  So, at least I’m not going it alone.

Wish me luck!

Hey — wanna know something very exciting?

I mean really exciting?

I made scrambled eggs for the first time ever.

Oh yeah, I know you are now crazy impressed, but pull yourself together.  (And, if you haven’t read Will You Still Love Me If I’m Not Mary Poppins? it might just explain why this is an exciting thing for me.)

~ 3 ~

I actually had Eric take a picture of that amazing event, and I was going to share it with you.  I was pretty horrified with the picture though. I had already been set on the fact that I needed to start working more seriously on losing weight (or, you know, working on it at all).  That picture pretty much cinched it for me.

Maybe someday I’ll show you proof that I made scrambled eggs.  This is not that day.

~ 4 ~

I’m going to try to read (or skim through) The Well-Trained Mind.  I got Eric and the kids to pick it up for me from the library the other day.

Apparently since Noah had to check it out on his card, he was quick to make sure the librarian know, “This is for my Mom,” in a way like he was worried she would think it was for him.  You know, because a lot of 11 year old boys want to work their way through 864 pages about classical education.

~ 5 ~

I don’t care what that book may say — we won’t be learning Latin.

After Noah took one year of Latin at co-op, he told his teacher, “I really like you, so don’t feel bad, but I guess Latin just isn’t my thing.”

~ 6 ~

Speaking of co-op, we’re actually starting up our homeschool co-op again soon.  I have yet to prepare (at all).  I’m teaching one semester of photography and one semester of altered art.  It should be fun (I hope), and I have 15 kids in my class.

This year, our co-op actually had to move to a larger church, as there are over 70 children involved in our co-op this year.  It should be pretty exciting.  Well – if I ever manage to sit down and plan my first class, that is.

~ 7 ~

I tried the new Talking Rain Twist water today.  (I got it on sale at Kroger, plus there were coupons on some of the bottles.  That meant that I paid for $2.82 for six of them, instead of their normal price of $1.59 each.)

I liked what it said on the side of the bottle, “As in Life, Chill for Best Results.”

LOVE the slogan on the bottle.

I am a mom of 5, and brand new to homeschooling. Thanks for posting today, especially about your 11 year old’s comment to his Latin teacher: priceless. I have an 11 year old who would likely say something similar!

Congrats on the eggs, and good luck on the soda plan. I ended up pretty much giving up soda in the last couple years because I gave up the caffeine while pregnant and then my little one’s tummy seemed bothered by carbonation, so that left me with non-fizzy options. I really enjoy the flavored waters though – more exciting than water and more refreshing than juice.

NO MORE SODA!!!!! Gasp! Diet Coke used to be one of my great pleasures. Now, since I needed to drop caffeine due to health issues, Caffeine Free Diet Coke is one of my pleasures. My husband doesn’t drink soda and sometimes makes snide comments about my soda drinking. But I’m not giving it up, no, no, no!

A couple of things: (1) I gave up soda for Lent when I was 15 yrs old and lost 15 lbs over that time. I never went back. You can do it! It’s only difficult for a couple weeks. (2) Last summer I decided to finally lose the weight and some friends recommended doing “Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred” workout video. I picked it up for $6 on Amazon and was diligent for 30 days. It promised up to 20 lbs in 30 days. I did lose 20 lbs. I am definitely a person who never thought it would happen, but this video worked. It’s a 27 minute video with 3 levels. You do each level for 10 days. So here’s just a suggestion that may help you too.

Good for you, soda is poison! Okay, maybe it’s not that bad, but it’s not good for us. I try to drink it only occasionally. LOL, How on Earth did you get through 30 years of life without cooking scrambled eggs. Do you know how deprived your kids have been!! ;)

@Cheryl@SomewhatCrunchy,

LOL — this is assuming that Eric can’t cook, right? ;) The kids have had scrambled eggs tons, it’s just that I was never the one who made them. He always takes care of dinner any time we have a “breakfast for dinner” night. So, I’ve also never made pancakes.

Congrats on the eggs! I know how to make them, but don’t make them often. I just don’t like the taste of eggs.

Good luck with the soda! I was able to give it up completely when I was pregnant, but haven’t been able to since. I don’t have any at home though and only drink it if we are out to eat. However, that ends up being once or twice a week. I did start not getting refills though.

I take that back, I did give up soda for awhile when I was doing Weight Watchers. LOL, how easy I forget about that.

Instead of quitting “cold turkey” with the soda, try to cut back slowly. Your body will hate you for quitting really fast! Trust me! For example instead of 3 glasses cut back to two glasses a day and continue counting down for a week until you are at zero! You can do it! It will be hard, but your body will thank you for cutting back slowly! …. Take Care…

@Tracy,

Thanks for the advice, Tracy. I’ve actually been cutting down over the last few weeks. So, then the time came to cut it out entirely. Still not happy about it, but I know it will be for the better.
