7 Quick Takes: July 30, 2010 (Vol. 47)

So, apparently I survived the Chuck E. Cheese birthday party last week, huh?  In what was apparently a sign that we are apparently pretty social homeschoolers, we ended up with 23 children at

the party.  When I ordered some lunch for myself, our party hostess (who was super helpful, especially as we added many kids to our original reservation) asked what I wanted to drink, I said, “Just water.”

“Are you sure?” she asked.  (I think I hesitated when saying it, apparently.)

I told her, “Yeah, I’m paying for 23 kids at a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party.  I’ll just drink water.”

When she brought out my salad plate, she brought me a cup and laughed, “Get any kind of drink you want.”

When the huge Chuck E. Cheese balloons weren’t cooperating with us at home (these are some crazy big balloons), we decided to scold them.  I shouted at them, “Charles Edward Cheese – you must behave.”

Thus began a week of random stern shoutings from people to “Charles Edward Cheese.”

Hello grape tomatoes!

I finally had my first visit of the season to our local Farmers Market this week.  I picked up sweet corn, zucchinis (since mine are just about done), yellow squash (didn’t plant them this year – boo!), onions, locally produced raw honey, kettle corn (Jack’s favorite), baked goods (muffins, scones, and a lemon square), and a cantaloupe.

Oh man!  Everything was so, so good!  I have really missed going to the Farmer’s Market.  Of course, I may have liked it better if my clothes weren’t sticking to me by the time I got in the van.  (I’m not ready for winter, but I sure wouldn’t mind fall.)

Have you picked up any great things at a Farmers Market near you?  What are your favorites?

If you’re a blogger and want to help grow your blog, you might want to consider picking up the recordings, handouts, and power points from Savvy Blogging Summit before Friday (the 30th) at noon.  The complete set of talks is normally $97, but until noon, they are 50% off!  (That’s a savings of $48.50!)

This is an affiliate link, but I thought the talks and handouts were just amazing, and I truly do believe that you will get a wealth of ideas from these materials.

By the way – the reason for the sale is because they announced the dates and location of the 2011 Savvy Blogging Summit conference.  It will be July 14 – 16 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

I hated getting on a plane to go to Savvy Blogging Summit earlier this month.  Really, really hated it.  I’m already dreading the thought of getting on a plane again.

Anyone else hate planes?

I realized that I could try to take the Amtrak to Savvy Blogging Summit next year instead of a plane.  You know, if I didn’t mind 40 hours of traveling/layovers.

Picky, picky, picky.

Did you see that my eBook is on sale for 50% off and that we’re using the money earned from the sale to buy Noah a special bike so that he can ride bikes with the rest of the family?  If you haven’t checked it out and you think you might like the eBook, it’s on sale for $3.75.

If you aren’t interested in the eBook, maybe you’d be willing to pass along word to readers or via social media.  We’d really appreciate it!

I have been really moved by the number of people that have passed along word about it or had nice things to say.  Thanks to those that have purchased through the sale.  (And thanks to those that went ahead and paid full price or bought more than one.  That was so kind!)

I seriously have still not really planned for the upcoming school year.  I have been working on making notes about how often we’ll do various subjects, but I haven’t yet mapped out our schedule.  I thought I was going to sit down and just do it today, but then I got sidetracked.

I hope that by next week, I can post about our curriculum for this next school year.  Please pray that I can actually get things scheduled.

Sadly, don’t even get me started on how prepared I am for our homeschool group’s teaching cooperative to start. It’s not pretty.

I bet you didn’t expect me to get anything profound from your 7 Quick Takes post, did you? I did, though. It made me realize how important it is to “pay it forward” as often as you can. Giving you that cup and telling you to get whatever drink you wanted probably didn’t cost that CEC worker a dime, but I bet it made your day and made you feel just a bit blessed and cared for. Sometimes it only takes a small act of kindness to add a huge blessing to someone’s day. We should try to do that whenever we can; the world would be a nicer place.

Thanks for the reminder.

@Kris @ WUHS and Eclipsed,

It’s very true, Kris.

Actually, during the same visit, Molly started to cry because she was out of tokens. Now, while I wasn’t happy that this was positive reinforcement for her crying, the manager asked her what was wrong and when he figured out that it was that she was out of tokens, he distracted her, threw about six tokens into her cup, and then said, “Oh my goodness! I think your cup just grew tokens!”

It was a really positive experience during the party. (Especially when they were so flexible when I confirmed 15 kids for the party and ended up with 23!)

It sounds like you had a great experience with the birthday party. Everyday I am amazed and encouraged by the kindness of ordinry people.

Yikes! I bet that wasn’t cheap!! When you hesitated about the drink, the waitress probably thought you were going to order Jack and Coke to get through the afternoon ;)

Yes, I hate flying, it terrifies me. I sat in my seat and cried hot silent tears before take off when we went to Germany. Once it’s over I think “That wasn’t so bad, I could do that again.” But the fearlessness leaves in about 24 hours LOL!
