Top Ten Reasons My Kids Wish They Were Me

in children, humor, motherhood

at OhAmanda.com

Just like network television has to offer up equal time to political candidates, I thought it would be one sided to only share the reasons that I wish I was one of my kids.  I was just going to guess on the reasons my kids might want to be me, but they were happy to start chiming in after I read the above mentioned post aloud to the family.

So, these aren’t my guesses, these are what the children actually said were some of their top reasons they wish they could be me. (Only the two younger children — ages 8 and 5 — chimed in, and boy did they chime in!)  It just goes to show – the grass is always greener on the other side, huh?

To be clearer in this, I’ll just post direct quotes from the children.  So, when it says, “You,” they were talking about me.  Of course, some of them may apply to you with your kids too.

1.   “You get to stay up all night.  Sometimes I come out in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and you’re still awake!”

2. “You get to play on the computer and play video games whenever you want.” This continued with a claim that when we first got Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii that I played it all night long.  While I did play it past their bedtime, I did not, in fact, play it all night long.

3. “You’re so smart.  You know divided questions, times, minuses – everything.” Dang it — I love five year olds.

4. “You get to go to all the fancy restaurants.” I believe that this is because Eric and I actually went out for dinner without the kids (something we never do) and went to The Melting Pot on Sunday night.  I love how this makes it sound like I go out to fancy restaurants all the time.

5. “You can sit in the front seat and drive.”

6. “You can have all the money and get to pick when you pay us.” I can see the part about me having money, though it’s not like I have all that much.  (Then again, if I happen to have a $20 bill, which is rare, the kids act like I’m all kinds of rich.)  As for me picking when to “pay them,” I think they were referring to their allowance, which they get right after Eric gets paid each month.  So, not sure what that’s about.

7. “You get to print stuff whenever you need to.” Loved this one!  Apparently it’s the simple pleasures in life that I just don’t realize I have.  I don’t have to ask permission to use the printer.

8. “You get to have a blog.” I kid you not – it was on their list.

9. “You get to make all the rules.” If only it were that simple.

10. “You get to pick when we go places, because if we want to go somewhere and you don’t, then we don’t go.  But, if you want to go somewhere, then we go.” Jack has a lot of injustice in his life.  It cracks me up that he makes it sound like I never take them anywhere they want.  You know, like the two hours we spent at Chuck E. Cheese on Friday afternoon – that was totally because I wanted to go there.

What do you think your kids would say about why they would want to be you?

Some of these were no surprise to me that the kids would say, but others left me a little surprised.  And, still other things that I thought they might say, they didn’t.

Oh lol, I loved 5 and isn’t chucky cheese a fancy restaurant kidstyle?
I had to ask my kids…..they all had interesting replies but I think my 5 year old summed it up, ” because you can do all the things I want to do but can’t” followed by a “so unfair”.

Oh my gosh, the idea of two hours in Chucky Cheese makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a knitting needle.

Holy Cow! I’m so glad that I hadn’t taken a drink right when I read this because I would have spit it all over the place. LOL

I’m glad I’m not the only one who cringes at the thought of Chuck E Cheese. My in-laws haven’t quite caught on to the fact that I speak my mind..no matter what. Unfortunately I wasn’t built with a filter, so I tend to be fairly blunt.

Last time my mother-in-law came to visit, she brought her 12 year old daughter with her. Sometime during the visit, they asked what I thought about going to Chuck E Cheese, and I told them it sounded like a version of my personal hell.

Your post was awesome!!! It’s amazing the perspective kids have. I remember when I was younger, all the grand lists of things I would do when I was grown-up. You know..stay up as late as want, drive a car, eat Oreos for dinner….

What a great list! I am totally copying this – I know my oldest (almost 6) thinks being a grown up is great because we get to make all the rules.

Love the list! #6 reminded me of my DD’s comment in Walmart the other day-Mom, when you die I am going to take all your money and buy everything I want. She’s 4.

Am I the only one who kinda likes Chuck E Cheese? *Ducks* Granted, I still havent actually taken my kids there, but on a rare occassion I love me some Ski Ball!

@Our Country Road,

Honestly? If we go really early in the day and it’s not busy, I don’t mind it. I can’t say that I go out of my way to go there, but we had a nice time while we were there.
