This is now the third month in a row where I have spent a week (or more) out of state. Quite frankly, I’m pretty exhausted now. I have been admonishing myself for getting so far behind in many things in my life (online and offline). But, I guess when I have spent about 25% of my time away since April, it’s just bound to happen.
I think my plan is to be at home as much as possible in July, though I will, of course, be attending the Savvy Blogging Summit in Colorado. (But, unlike all of my previous trips in the last few months, I’ll be making it a solo trip.)

On Thursday, I picked up two new pairs of glasses. These are my first new glasses in about seven years or so. I suspect it’s going to take some getting used to. I’m pretty psyched to actually own two pairs of glasses though — one of my fears is always that my glasses will break when I’m on a trip. So, now I’ll be sure to bring an extra pair with me!
The glasses that I have now are quite a bit different from my old glasses, so hopefully everyone else will get used to the new ones too. I saw Molly’s gymnastics teacher out and after saying hi, she immediately asked if I had new glasses.

On Sunday of this week, I spent three hours weeding my Grandma’s garden along with two of my sisters. I would not have anticipated that the afternoon would have been as amusing as it was. We decided that we all looked like hippies on a commune. I also often lamented the fact that when sweat drips in your eye, it hurts like crazy.
We were so excited with the hard work that we had done that we had to wake Papa up to show him the garden. Poor Papa!

I have decided that I need either an online assistant or a Mother’s helper with some mad Internet skills.
Have you ever had a Mother’s Helper?
I once worked as one in college. I felt like I probably wasn’t much of a help, but the Mom always seemed excited for me to come over. I always thought that she just wanted someone to hang out with because she was lonely.
I picked up the coolest thing at Walmart a couple of weeks ago — a cooling mat for my laptop by Targus. Love this thing! It sure beats using one of the kids’ oversized books as a laptop mat. By the time I would be done using the laptop (away from my desk), my lap would be warm, the laptop would be warm, and so would the book that I had it sitting on.
So, while I was away a couple of weekends ago, I bought this cooling mat with fans (it is cheaper on Amazon than when I got it). Too, too cool. (Ha! Get it?)

It’s probably a sign that a person is really tired when they have to stop writing their 7 Quick Takes to take a break before writing out item number six. This break takes place at 1 am and involves closing of the eyes and the wish that someone would just carry that person to bed.
You know, theoretically.

I decided to be adventurous this week, and I finally tried sushi that had raw fish in it. I have stuck with things likecucumber rolls and California rolls until Wednesday when I finally had a salmon roll. It took a lot of courage, but I actually enjoyed it. Go figure.
Although, I do have to admit that when I get sushi from the Thai/Japanese restaurant that we enjoy so much, I will probably still cop out and mostly stick to the California rolls.
When was the last time that you tried a food that you were leery of? Did you like it?

If I wasn’t at work right now, I’d be right there with you on # 6. And you’re making me feel brave enough (now that I’m not pregnant or nursing a little one) to try sushi. Yeah, I do the vegetarian kind too.
@Kristen,
Sue gave a suggestion lower in the comments on the kinds of fish sushi that a beginner might like to try. (She said that salmon was a good starter.) Good luck in being brave!
I know what it is like to play catch-up. I spend a good deal of my time out of town, too. I have some things became OBE (overcome by events) before I can get to them. Come to think of it, though, that is not bad — it is an easy way to get out of doing them!
So, where is the photo of you in your new glasses? Let’s see it!
Way to be adventurous eating real sushi! Salmon was a good choice for a first try. If you liked the salmon you can probably handle yellowtail (also may be called amberjack) as it has a similar oily texture. Maybe you can work up to some tuna after that (the lighter the color the more oily, and better). I have faith in you. You can do it! I have been living in Japan for nearly 16 years, and while I can eat pretty much anything I encounter at a sushi bar there are still a few I’d rather avoid! Learn what you like, and stick with that. Just my two yen. ;o)
@Sue,
Thanks for all of the sushi encouragement. Was it hard getting used to the food when you moved to Japan, or were you already used to eating a lot of Japanese food? (Your “that’s my two yen” made me burst out laughing. I don’t know why. You’re just too cute!)
Don’t worry — I’ll eventually show off my new glasses. We’re going to try to take some pictures this weekend because I need to make some business cards.
@Angie,
I actually loved most Japanese food from the beginning. It’s just that raw fish has a whole new texture that I had no experience with. I still don’t like raw fish that’s “crunchy”, for lack of a better word. It needs to be chewed easily and go down smoothly! I admit to gagging quite a few times before getting used to it.
I tried many a time to like raw fish sushi, but never acquired a taste for it. I’ll stick with California roll, unagi (broiled freshwater eel) , and tobiko (fish eggs)
It’s the middle of the day and I think I am at #6 right now!
I would love to have a mother’s helper! That would be so nice. Even just once a month or something! I am sure you’ll love it!
@Tina Fisher,
I don’t think I’ll actually get a Mother’s Helper, but I really would love it. I agree — even once a month would be good. I thought that at something like $7/hour just 5 hours a week (one day), that would be heavenly.
Do your kids eat sushi?? Griffin absolutely LOVES it. The sushi guy at our supermarket has taken a liking to him and is always giving him ideas on what to try next. He also comments every time on how healthy Griffin must be cause he has such rosy cheeks.
Griffin has the hardest time understanding him, it’s pretty funny to watch – Mr Miyagi and Griffin. LOL And when, oh when, might you guys come for a visit?? We’d love to see you!
@KimB,
No way. My kids are wicked picky. I’ve always been impressed with what a great varied diet your kids eat.
We definitely want to come sometime, it’s just been so crazy since we went to Wisconsin for almost a week in April, 10 days in May, and then a week in June (just got back the other day). I think that will be our last trip for a while though, so maybe we can plan things for out your way here eventually.
I looked at one of those cooling mats this week. It’s on my list of things to buy eventually.
@Kris @ WUHS and Eclipsed,
I really like the cooling mat. I’m using it right now, actually. It killed me to spend the money on it, but it was definitely worth it.
I have been in a food rut lately, and need to be a little adventureous. We have a sushi bar within walking distance of our house. Maybe I can talk my husband into trying it for our date night.
A Mother’s Helper? Boy, I could use one! When I worked outside the home, my husband and I used to joke and say we both needed a wife!
