The other day, we were reading a book about saints during school time. ( Holy Friends: Thirty Saints and Blesseds of the Americas – This has been a perfect companion book to studying about early American history this year.)
Just a little while after we were finished with school, Jack said, “You know, Mom, I’ve been thinking.”
“About what, Buddy?”
“It’s kind of funny. We keep happening to read books that have people in them that are Catholic. And, you know, we’re Catholic. I just thought that was funny.”
It was one of those moments when I had to fight crinkling up my forehead and turning my head off to one side (apparently this is what I do more often than I care for). But, in all honesty, I think I probably did it anyway.
“Honey?” I couldn’t help but say, as I tried to compose my thoughts.
“Yeah?”
“You know I pick all of our books for school, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, so I purposefully make sure we read some Catholic books because we’re Catholic.”
“Oh,” Jack exclaimed. “That makes sense.”
I don’t know why, but the whole exchange just made me giggle. Why was his first conclusion that it was a coincidence rather than that it was careful planning. Funny kid.

Wow! You are one smooth mom. You just slipped those books in there, and made it look like happenstance.
