Buying Garden Plants Before Planting Season

in gardening

I have been gardening for a few years now.  Each year, as our official planting day gets very near (or sometimes right on the official planting day), we head out to the locally owned greenhouse, as well as some of the larger chains, and we pick out our plants for that year’s garden.

This usually means that we are pushing our way through a crowd, looking for some varieties of plants at multiple stores because they are sold out, and just generally taking more time looking for everything we need.

This year, I bought my plants all about three weeks before the official planting day.  This may, indeed, come back to haunt me.  But, hopefully I will be able to continue to tout it as a “works for me.”  We did, indeed, still have to fight crowds at the local greenhouse.  But, we had a great variety of choices.  We were able to buy some things that are normally long since sold out, so I was delighted.  Plus, we got to buy some fabulous looking plants.  (Fingers crossed — we’re going to try to put in grapes this year.  We tried to buy some last year, but by the time we were looking, the plants were pathetic looking.  Think Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tree.)

Of course, this does mean some extra work.  We had an increased amount of time of putting plants outside during the day and bringing them in at night.  But, we were willing to do the extra work to get the benefit of better looking plants and more choices.

Are you going to have a garden this year?  What are you planning to grow?

I blogged about our first attempt at gardening here http://onestarrynight.com/garden-year/

It’s scary! Naturally AFTER everything is said and done, I freak out if the plants are getting enough sun, if they will live, if they will grow and produce… AHH stressful lol.
