Easier Measuring for Liquid Ingredients

in WFMW,cooking/baking,finances/frugal ideas

Right now with a rattling cough, full sinuses, and eyes that burn, as well as two kids taking antibiotics, we are using medicine dosage cups a lot lately for their intended purpose.  However, my favorite (and most used) way to use medicine dosage cups is a whole lot more fun.

Although I love measuring cups and spoons (I have several sets of each), my favorite way to measure smaller amounts of liquid ingredients is to use all of those medicine dosage cups that come with all of the children’s liquid medications.

Most of the cups can hold three teaspoons (which is one tablespoon), and have lots of markings for a variety of measurements.  So, instead of having to use a 1/2 teaspoon measuring spoon three times for 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (and worrying about overfilling) or dirtying both a teaspoon and the 1/2 teaspoon, I just use a medicine dosage cup and fill it to the 1 1/2 teaspoon line.  Not only do I have fewer spills, but it’s also great for allowing the kids to put in these ingredients (and I know it will be easy for them to pour in).

If your household is like mine, you have lots of these little cups sitting around.  Every so often, we’ll throw some in the recycling bin, but we usually keep them for an easy and frugal way to measure out smaller liquid ingredients.

Do you have any “odd” uses for everyday household items?

Ooohh…this is great! I always wonder what to do with the cups after the medicine is gone. I usually throw them away eventually! Thanks for sharing!

What a great idea! I'm always looking for ways to make it easier for them to help me bake. I'll have to give it a try!

I love ideas that take something that you already have and repurpose it. Those types of ideas REALLY work for me! =) Great tip!

Oh wow! And "aha!" moment for me! I was going shopping today and had measuring cups on my list. I never seem to have enough of the right size! I'm going to give these a try for a while.

Angie I can't even *believe* that this was your Works for Me Wednesday! I almost posted the pretty much exact same thing, because I use the 2T cups to measure out 2T of salad dressing since I do Weight Watchers. One serving of dressing or dips is almost always 2T.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a fanatic about repurposing items instead of throughing them away.

I just posted a similar post about repurposing unexpected household items. But, I admit, I never really thought of using medicine measures for cooking measurements. I just save them for medicine in the future (since we always lose the one the pharmacy gives us).
Thanks for the idea.
