Getting Nervous in Church

in church/faith, family, humor

During one week day Mass not long ago, the homily was directed to the children there, as there were a couple of religious education classes in attendance.

One of the readings had been about Jonah and his visit to Ninevah.

Father then asked the children if they remembered what happened before Jonah had gone to Ninevah.

One child’s hand shot up, only for him to declare, “I forgot,” when he was called on.

Then, our very own Jack raised his hand.

I got nervous, unsure of what might come out of his mouth.

Father called on him, and then Jack looked at me to answer. I said to him, “You were the one who raised your hand, you answer.”

Jack then paused for a minute and then said, “God told a message to Jonah over and over, but Jonah didn’t want to listen.”

I was almost ashamed when I got kudos from several people around us for Jack’s answer. I smiled politely.

Truth was — he was as likely to give the answer that he did as he was to say that Jonah was an asperagus that rode on a pirate ship where they played Go Fish to see who had to be thrown overboard.

So, thanks to the Veggie Tales for making me look like a good Mom, and thanks to God for sending the Holy Spirit upon Jack to make sure his mother didn’t look like an idiot.
