I Remember When You Used to Get Paid to Recycle

in going green, reflection

Yes — I remember a time long ago when we collected soda cans so that we could turn them in and get actual cash money for them. And, I’m sure there are still people who do that now.

But…I am now in a considerably different situation. We have been feeling bad for a while that we don’t recycle, so we finally contacted our trash company (because of where we live, we pay for trash pick up through a service, instead of through the city) and signed up for the recycling service.

Now, I have a box from the company in which to keep all of my items. I have to admit, I was shocked at the list of things we could turn in for recycling! If I had known that, we might have done it even sooner!

Oh, and now…I am paying an extra $16 every three months on my trash bill for the privilege of that recycling. Youch! Apparently I’ll just have to reminince and think of the “old” days when it actually earned you money.

Oh I remember we would save our cans and go to the machine that would eat them and then give us money back. Normally we would rent a movie with it…We were not really well off growing up especially when my parents sacrificed alot to send us to Catholic school. I think we would do it every few months. Have a great day!

I remember those days! At least you have a good list of things that can be recycled. The recycling program in Manitowoc leaves much to be desired. Madison was much more eco-friendly.

wow!! we don’t have to PAY to recycle but they will pick it up! I am happy to report that most weeks our recycling can is much fuller than our trash can. as for those aluminum cans……R smashes them and then takes them to a recycling center. he uses the money for Scout camps and such!

Recycling is much more common in other parts of the country than where I live. I miss the pop can refunds, too. I bet if we had a refund, there would be less bottles and cans along the roads here. And those who are too cheap to pay the extra for the amount the build into the price of the pop/soda/coke, well they might actually lose weight from deciding the extra cost is not worth it to buy their caffeine and sugar fix. (our state also has a huge obesity problem…)
